The car door closes. Your parents, family or friends wave goodbye. You pick up your last bag, look towards your new home and suddenly realise that university has officially begun.

It’s exciting. It’s slightly nerve-racking. And if you’re honest, you’re probably wondering whether everyone else feels just as uncertain as you do. They do.

Freshers’ Week has a reputation for being loud, busy and non-stop. Parts of it certainly are, but there’s far more to it than nights out and welcome events. It’s about finding your feet, learning your way around and gradually turning a completely unfamiliar place into somewhere that starts to feel like home. The first few days often pass in a blur but don’t worry if you can’t remember everything. Nobody expects you to.

Give Yourself Time to Settle In

Many students arrive with a long mental list of things they think they should be doing immediately.

Meet everyone. Join five societies. Learn the campus. Unpack every box. Attend every event. The reality is much calmer. Start with the basics. Make your bed. Unpack the essentials. Find the nearest supermarket. Learn the walk to campus.

Once you’ve done those simple things, everything else feels much easier. There’s no prize for trying to fit your entire university experience into the first forty-eight hours.

Everyone Is Looking for New Friends

One of the biggest misconceptions about Freshers’ Week is that everyone else already knows each other. They don’t. Most students arrive knowing nobody at all. That awkward conversation whilst making a cup of tea in the shared kitchen?

Almost everyone has it. The same goes for introducing yourself whilst waiting to collect your student ID or sitting next to somebody at a welcome talk.

It might feel uncomfortable for a minute or two but remember that the person you’re speaking to is probably hoping someone starts a conversation with them as well. The easiest friendships often begin with the simplest questions.

“Where have you travelled from?”

“What course are you studying?”

Before long you’ll probably find yourselves walking to campus together.

You Don’t Have To Say Yes To Everything

Freshers’ Week is full of opportunities.

Society fairs. Sports clubs. Welcome events. Live music. Food markets. Campus tours. It’s impossible to do everything and there’s absolutely no expectation that you should.

Choose the things that genuinely interest you.If you enjoy sport, spend some time speaking to the clubs that catch your attention.

If music, volunteering or photography sounds more appealing, head in that direction instead. University isn’t about following somebody else’s timetable. It’s about gradually discovering what suits you.

Learn Your Way Around Early

One of the best things you can do during your first couple of days is simply go for a walk. Find your lecture buildings before teaching begins. Locate the library. Work out where the Students’ Union is. See where the nearest supermarket is.

It sounds obvious, but doing this whilst things are still relatively quiet removes a surprising amount of stress once lectures begin. Nobody enjoys rushing across campus on the first morning whilst trying to work out whether they’re heading in completely the wrong direction. A relaxed walk beforehand solves that problem.

Homesickness Is More Common Than People Admit

Some students settle in immediately. Others need a little longer. Both experiences are completely normal. You might feel fine during the day and then suddenly miss home once everything goes quiet in the evening.

That doesn’t mean you’ve made the wrong decision. It simply means you’re adjusting to a completely new chapter in your life.

Keeping in touch with family helps, but so does giving yourself the chance to build a new routine in Ormskirk. Most students find those feelings gradually fade as lectures begin, friendships develop and university life starts to feel familiar.

Freshers’ Fair Is Worth More Than the Freebies

If you’ve spoken to anyone who’s already been to university, they’ll probably tell you to visit the Freshers’ Fair. They’re right. Yes, you’ll come away with a tote bag or two, a handful of vouchers and perhaps more pens than you’ll ever use, but that’s not why it’s worth going. It’s one of the easiest places to discover what’s happening beyond your course.

Whether you’re interested in football, photography, hiking, gaming, drama or volunteering, there’s usually a society looking for new members. You don’t have to commit to everything on the day. Simply having a chat with current members often gives you a better idea of whether it’s something you’d enjoy. Many students end up joining a society they hadn’t even considered before arriving at university.

Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

Freshers’ Week can be busy. There are people to meet, places to find and plenty happening from morning until late in the evening. It’s perfectly fine to take a break.

If you fancy an afternoon exploring Ormskirk instead of attending another event, do it. If you’d rather spend an evening watching a film with your new housemates than going out, that’s perfectly normal too. The first week isn’t a competition to see who can attend the most events. It’s simply the beginning of your university experience.

You’ll have months, and hopefully years, to try new things.

The Kitchen Soon Becomes The Heart Of The House

Student kitchens have a habit of bringing people together. Someone starts making pasta. Another person wanders in to make a cup of tea. Before long, three or four people are chatting about where they’re from, comparing lecture timetables or laughing about how long it took them to find the library.

Those conversations rarely feel important at the time. Looking back, they’re often the moments people remember most. Friendships don’t always begin during organised events. Quite often they start whilst waiting for the kettle to boil.

Getting Comfortable In Your New Home

The first evening in a new house can feel slightly strange. Nothing is where you’re used to finding it and your bedroom probably feels more like a room you’ve borrowed than somewhere you actually live. That changes surprisingly quickly. Hang a few photographs. Unpack properly rather than living out of a suitcase. Learn everyone’s names.

After a week or two, the unfamiliar surroundings begin to feel surprisingly ordinary. If you’re still looking for somewhere to live during your time at university, browsing Edge Hill University Student Accommodation is a good place to start. Seeing a property in person often tells you far more than a list of features ever could.

Don’t Worry About Getting Everything Right

One of the biggest pressures students put on themselves is the feeling that they’re supposed to settle in immediately. Everyone finds their own pace. Some people seem confident from the moment they arrive.

Others take a few weeks before everything begins to click. Neither experience is unusual.

University isn’t something you master during Freshers’ Week. It’s something you grow into.

Every conversation, lecture, society meeting and shared meal helps you feel a little more at home than the day before.

Questions New Students Often Ask

What if I don’t make friends during the first week?

Don’t panic. Plenty of friendships develop after lectures begin. Freshers’ Week is only the start of university life, not the deadline for meeting people.

Is it worth joining societies straight away?

If something interests you, absolutely. You don’t have to stay forever, but trying a new activity is one of the easiest ways to meet people outside your course.

Will I have time to explore Ormskirk?

Definitely. Once lectures settle into a routine, you’ll soon discover your favourite cafés, parks, shops and places to relax. The town is easy to explore on foot, which makes getting to know the area much more enjoyable.

Is everyone nervous during Freshers’ Week?

More than most people admit. Even students who appear confident are often feeling the same as everyone else. A smile and a simple conversation usually go much further than you think.

A Week You’ll Probably Remember for Years

Ask graduates about Freshers’ Week and you’ll rarely hear them talk about the timetable. Instead, they’ll remember the first people they met, getting lost on campus, laughing with complete strangers who quickly became friends and gradually realising that university already felt less intimidating than it had a few days earlier.

Looking back, the week isn’t memorable because everything went perfectly. It’s memorable because it was the beginning of a completely new chapter, one that most people look back on with a smile long after they’ve left Ormskirk.

There’s a moment that almost every new student experiences.
